CELLAR MUSIC 072023 (RECORDED JULY 2023)
Together presents two familiar names in a not-so-familiar setting. Even though saxophonist Eric Alexander and pianist/organist Mike LeDonne have crossed paths on many recordings and club dates since their first meeting in 1992, this is the first time they have recorded as a duo. The results are what is to be expected — two old friends and exceptional artists, steeped in the hard bop tradition, relishing an opportunity to have a musical conversation. Like a couple who have been living together for a while, LeDonne and Alexander have a knack for completing each other’s thoughts. On the first track, “For Mabes,” LeDonne seamlessly punctuates Alexander’s opening lines on a tune dedicated to Harold Mabern, who was a mentor to both musicians. The duo also understands the importance of giving one another space for their own ideas. Alexander waits patiently for LeDonne to explore the harmonic beauty of “Round Midnight” before entering with his own interpretation of that Monk classic. On “I’m in the Mood for Love,” LeDonne graciously opens the ending for Alexander’s alto playing to conclude the tune with a noteworthy cadenza. Although the release is called Together, the recording features solo selections from both musicians. Alexander turns to the soprano sax for a solo reading of “Autumn in New York” and further cements his prowess on tenor and the blues on “Two in One.” LeDonne shifts from the introspective style of Bill Evans to the powerful sounds of McCoy Tyner on two originals — “Lost But Not Forgotten” and “Mary.” Let’s not wait another 32 years for Alexander and LeDonne to get Together Again or for LeDonne to record a well-deserved solo piano recital.
BOTTOM LINE: Having heard saxophonist Eric Alexander and pianist/organist Mike LeDonne in various groups over the years, Together is the first opportunity to hear them as a duo. The two inspire each other throughout this set of originals and jazz standards, including solo performances from both. It’s surprising that the two have not recorded as a duo prior to this date, but it’s no surprise this session is a winner in more ways than one!
