JAZZMENTL RECORDS (RECORDED JANUARY 2024)
Canadian pianist Paul Tobey captured the attention of critics in the early 2000s with his Street Culture release on the Arkadia label. That was to be the first of several releases he would do for the label, but severe tendonitis injuries cut his career short. Twenty years later Tobey released It’s Time, documenting his success in overcoming the debilitating effects of the disease and re-establishing his position among a long line of Canadian jazz pianists. Recorded in his home studio in Niagara-on-the-Lake, It’s Time showcases Tobey’s ability to blend romantic and soulful styles on timeless melodies such as “Over The Rainbow,” “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and even “Take Five.” His bright single note attack is in full display on his poignant version of “My Foolish Heart,” while a strong walking bass in his left hand is interspersed with the Latin rhythms of “Caminar (The Walking Song).” It’s Time is an appropriate title for Tobey’s return to the recording scene, because now it’s time for Tobey to once again capture the attention of critics and fans who will enjoy the melodic mastery he brings to solo piano. Welcome back Paul!
BOTTOM LINE: “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” is more than just a tune on It’s Time,” the long awaited release from Canadian pianist Paul Tobey. For more than 20 years, Tobey dreamt of returning to the piano despite the effects of severe tenonitis. The results speak for themselves in a session marked by his deep appreciation for the music he has selected and the heartfelt way in which he performs it.
